Using Vitamin A as Regimen for Adult Acne

Research has indicated that there is a close connection between retinol, more commonly known as vitamin A, and acne. These same researches have shown that when vitamin A is used in large amounts of about 300 to 500 thousand IU per day, it can put paid to the acne condition, even if it is very drastic. One of the most popular medications that are based on vitamin A is Accutane. Accutane consists the compound isotretinoin, which is a derivative of retinoic acid, an oxidized form of vitamin A. this medication is a prescribed medication for the treatment of acne. It is used as part of a complete program – the prescription acne treatment typically begins with topical treatment with a bactericidal such as benzoyl peroxide, then some oral medication and then the therapy with Accutane. The results of such a combination therapy are found to be much positive, even in severe cases such as cystic acne.

However, Accutane is just one example. Vitamin A, on the whole, is quite effective in the treatment of acne. In a kind of reverse analysis, it has been shown that people who have been kept bereft of vitamin A develop acne within a short period of time. Vitamin A is responsible for the proper health and maintenance of the skin and that's the reason why it is considered as a suitable remedy for the acne conditions. But, since the overconsumption of vitamin A is also dangerous to the body, it is important to know the right dosage before beginning the use of it as an acne treatment. Many of the acne vitamin A medications are given on prescription only, due to this reason.

So, what is vitamin A actually? Vitamin A is the name for the chemical retinol, an important chemical for the proper growth and development of the body. This is a fat soluble vitamin, which means it dissolves only in the fatty content present in the body and not in water. (It is because of this reason that any excess of vitamin A introduced into the body stays put and is not removed by excretion.) Vitamin A is essential for various aspects of human health, including normal vision (deficiency can cause a disease known as night blindness), maintenance of skin health (deficiency can cause acne) and in proper immune function of the body. A healthy amount of vitamin A can keep mild infectious diseases such as viral and bacterial conditions away.

Vitamin A is actually quite abundant in our diet and it is very difficult to work up a deficiency with it. The vitamin is present in most of the yellow and orange colored fruits and vegetables that we consume. Carrots are the richest source of vitamin A – they contain beta carotene, which is a precursor to vitamin A. The vitamin is also present in cantaloupes, pumpkins and mangoes. Other fruits and vegetables where you can find vitamin A include watermelon, sweet potatoes, asparagus, apricots and many of the green vegetables including spinach and broccoli. Several herbs also contain vitamin A, the most common being cayenne, chickweed and alfalfa. Among animal products, livers and liver oil are rich in vitamin A.

A healthy diet containing vitamin A could be an answer for the prevention and treatment of acne. However, it is important not to cook these foods too much, because vitamin A is destroyed even with the slightest amount of cooking.

Back Acne - Why They Are Persistent and How to Get Rid of Them
You can get rid of back acne using some of the same methods that you use for facial acne, but there are differences because back acne can be more persistent.
